Providing A Legal Education To Individuals In The Principles, Practices & Theory Of Law
CHAMBER'S PARALEGAL PROGRAM LEGAL CLINIC
The Chamber’s Paralegal Certificate Program provides a legal education to individuals in the principles, practices, and theory of law. The Program was undertaken for several reasons, including to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for admission to law school, paralegal practice in NY, to provide a greater breadth of knowledge to those working in other professions such as politics or business, to provide a current paralegal with advanced training or greater specialization, to understand how to use technology in law and to provide clinical work for participants in the Chamber’s Paralegal Program.
The Chamber’s Paralegal Program Legal Clinic (PPLC) is a program providing hands-on-legal experience to students and services to various Chamber members and the community. Clinics are usually directed by clinical lawyers from the Law Firm of Figeroux & Associates. Legal clinics are conducted in Small Business Solutions, U.S. Citizenship, Foreclosure Strategies and Wills & Estate Issues.
Legal clinics originated as a method of practical teaching of law school students, but today they encompass also free legal aid with no academic links. There are practice-based law clinics with no academic link which provide hands-on skills to legal professionals on practical ethical dimensions of the law at the same time offering free public legal services.
Need And Importance
According to the Law Firm of Figeroux & Associates, in cases where parties cannot afford a lawyer and are not provided legal services by the state, the quality of that legal representation is often questionable. Therefore the need for clinical legal education, or establishing legal aid clinics in paralegal programs, where students can provide supervised legal assistance to those in need is very important.
Goals, Objectives and Methods
Students typically provide assistance with forms, research, drafting legal arguments and meeting with clients. In many cases, one of the clinic’s professors will guide students through the process.
Areas of Service
Legal clinics are conducted in Small Business Solutions, U.S. Citizenship, Foreclosure Strategies and Wills & Estate Issues. Additional clinical legal services exist in diverse areas such as immigration law, environmental law, intellectual property, housing, criminal defense, criminal prosecution, American Indian law, human rights and international criminal law. In those instances we refer participants to other programs.
